Llanberis, North WalesSnowdonia Holiday - Scenic walking & Llanberis attractions - June 2019 (52 images)
In a return visit to Snowdonia we filled in some gaps in our touring of this amazingly scenic area.  That meant steaming along on more heritage railways, a good look around the town considered the outdoor activity centre of North Wales, Llanberis, and a fantastic walk along the awesome Aberglaslyn Pass to Beddgelert.

The beautiful Snowdonia National Park in North Wales was our destination, and of course we enjoyed an exhilarating 'walk' up Snowdon among the stupendous mountain scenery!  We also explored the area's world-famous slate and copper mining industrial heritage and rode some wonderful preserved railways – the Welsh Highland and Great Orme tramway.

Grand Union Canal, BuckinghamshireBuckinghamshire Holiday, Bletchley Park & Shuttleworth - May 2017 (58 images)
Bletchley Park, the renowned WW2 code breaking site was a priority during our Buckinghamshire holiday, as was the nearby Buzz narrow-gauge heritage railway plus some wonderful walks - one encompassing the Grand Union Canal and great train robbery site.  Then over in adjacent Bedfordshire we toured the Shuttleworth Collection, a marvellous museum of vintage aircraft.

Dorset's Jurassic CoastDorset's Jurassic Coast & Dorset Attractions Holiday - June 2016 (52 images)
Dorset's wonderful World Heritage coast was the draw for yet another cottage holiday and it didn't disappoint.  In some staggeringly scenic coastal walking we explored the geologically rich Lulworth Cove & Durdle Door, found fossils at Chesil Beach & the Isle of Portland, and walked the Purbeck Way at Wareham.  We also visited two museums: the Royal Signals and Tolpuddle Martyrs.

Spanning the Welsh-English border, the Wye Valley has some superb scenery to enjoy, as does the neighbouring Forest of Dean.  We toured this attractive area of Britain in a week's cottage holiday, visiting beautiful Symonds Yat; the nostalgic Dean Forest steam railway; several ruined castles; went underground at Clearwell Caves, oh, and enjoyed some wonderful walks of course!

Don't you just love the Bond movies?  Well, the Bond in Motion exhibition at London's Covent Garden has an enthralling display of 50 vehicles actually used in the famed James Bond films.  And it's not just the cars; there's aircraft, bikes and boats used by 007 too, plus a fascinating selection of props, gadgets, models and production art to wonder at.  Let's go...

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in Wales has some terrific coastal walking to enjoy and so we did; around Broad Haven, St Davids Peninsula and Trefin.  And how could we resist visiting the wonderful Skomer Island with its cute puffins, or a tour of the splendid St Davids Cathedral and adjacent Bishop's Palace; oh, and Carew Castle and Tidal Mill... all in a sun-blessed week!

Heard of the Harry Potter films?  Well, now there's an awesome visitor attraction dedicated to them, called the Warner Bros. Studio Tour.  We'd enjoyed many of the films so we headed there to partake in some magic, spells and potions and learn how the films were made as we wandered among the various film sets from the Great Hall to Diagon Alley and Hogwarts Castle.  Magical!

Kent has more castles than any other county in Britain and we explored two of them on our cottage holiday in the 'Garden of England' - the lovely Leeds and Bodiam castles.  Our other visits included Chatham's historic dockyard, Port Lympne wild animal park, a ride on the KESR preserved railway, and several walks surrounding the Pilgrims Way and Reculver Tower near Herne Bay.

Our military related visits are always a firm favourite with us, so with another London trip well overdue we headed into the capital to explore the sobering Britain at War Experience at London Bridge and then on to the enthralling Churchill War Rooms at Westminster.  We then crossed St. James's Park and Green Park to view the recently unveiled Bomber Command Memorial.

We'd never holidayed in Wiltshire despite passing through many times... until now.  Our various visits included Stonehenge (of course!), more mysterious stones at Avebury, Salisbury's grand medieval cathedral, Old Sarum fort, Rockbourne and its Roman Villa, and Breamore House.  Plus we ventured into the neighbouring New Forest and explored bewitching Burley.

We hadn't visited a military related visitor attraction for a few years so we put this right with a trip to Duxford Imperial War Museum, a fascinating historic aviation collection in Cambridgeshire.  The vast complex housed many preserved military and civil aircraft, plus a Battle of Britain section, a 1940 Operations Room, American Air Museum, Land Warfare section and more...

Isle of Wight holidayIsle of Wight Holiday - June 2011 (63 images)
We'd been aiming to tour the Isle of Wight for ages and finally did so with a week's cottage holiday on this wonderful island.  To the west we visited The Needles, Alum Bay and the Old Battery fort; in the middle historic Carisbrook Castle and the preserved IOW Steam Railway; and to the south scenic Shanklin and gorgeous Godshill with its marvellous model village.Return to top

A visit to the Watercress LineWatercress Line - Mid Hants Steam Railway - July 2010 (17 images)
Mike didn't get his annual steam train fix on holiday this year (the withdrawal symptoms are a nightmare!) so we decided to fix that with a fairly local visit to the Mid Hants Steam Railway, otherwise known as The Watercress Line.  We saw the engines, the stations, the signals, and Mike got soot in his hair and cinders in his eyes and that made him a happy chappie again!

Cornwall, aha - the beaches, the sights, the scenery, the sun... oh yes, let's not forget the sun!  So we packed our sunscreen and off we went for another (last time 2002) visit to this wonderfully scenic part of England, touring the far west taking in Land's End, St Ives, Mullion Cove & Poldhu Point, Praa Sands, Porthleven, Marazion & St Michael's Mount.  And the sun shone all week long!

At short notice we had an opportunity to cruise across the seas to a south-sea island in the sun...  Err, OK then, it was a visit to Osborne House on the Isle of Wight.  So off we went with cameras charged to Queen Victoria's huge seaside home overlooking The Solent where we snapped away in the amazing gardens and adjacent Swiss Cottage.  We can dream though...

Cotswold holiday in the west MidlandsCotswold Holiday - July 2009 (62 images)
Figuring it was about time we visited the very scenic Cotswolds in the West Midlands, we rented an apartment in the lovely village of Broadway for a week.  From there we walked up to the nearby tower, toured the Shakespeare houses at Stratford-upon-Avon, enjoyed some history at Warwick and Sudeley castles, rode on the GWR steam railway and visited Bourton on the Water.

On a cold and wet winter's day we headed to the city of Portsmouth to enjoy the Victorian Festival of Christmas at Portsmouth Historic dockyard for some traditional (and snow covered) seasonal cheer.  Not only did we marvel at the colourful characters and street performances, we also boarded HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and saw the preserved Mary Rose.

Having seen the 2007 TV series 'Britain's Favourite View' and being blown away by the stunning scenery of Gower in south Wales, we were inspired to make it our destination for our 2008 cottage holiday.  We weren't disappointed, despite some variable weather, and enjoyed plenty of scenic (and strenuous!) walking in and around the many lovely coastal areas.

Off to London and the Imperial War Museum where we were impressed by the well organised gallery halls containing aircraft, guns, tanks and ground vehicles used in various conflicts.  In other areas we learnt much about the technicalities of warfare and the human side.  We also visited 'For Your Eyes Only', the Ian Fleming exhibition taking place at the time.

Short break in the New ForestNew Forest - October 2007 (38 images)
Staying in a lovely New Forest cottage for a short break in this beautiful area of Hampshire, we visited Burley to buy some scrumpy cider and fudge, Lyndhurst to look around the museum, and walked along the pebbles to Hurst Castle.  We also visited Buckler's Hard, an Owl and Otter wildlife park, and enjoyed a lovely scenic autumn walk around Brockenhurst.

On another jaunt to London we toured the Tower Bridge Exhibition, learnt all about its fascinating history and enjoyed the breathtaking views from the high-level walkways.  There were plenty of hands-on exhibits to try; we also visited the Victorian Engine Rooms and saw the original steam engines that used to power the bridge's arms.

Mike wanted to try his hand at putting a tank through its paces, but the nearest he got was a wild ride round the dirt track in a tracked vehicle.  We had a most enjoyable look round - and in - this fascinating historic collection of huge tanks and tracked military armoured vehicles from various eras and wars at this Dorset attraction.

Staying near the Welsh border we enjoyed a ride on a quaint narrow gauge steam train from Welshpool and were fascinated by Ironbridge Gorge and Blists Hill Victorian town.  We did two walks - part of Offa's Dyke from Knighton and part of the Shropshire Way, we explored castles at Stokesay and Ludlow, and we visited a past times nostalgia museum and Acton Scott farm.Return to top

London's Millennium BridgeV&A Museum and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre - April 2007 (18 images)
For our first outing in 2007 we went to London to see the Kylie exhibition which was taking place at the V&A museum, followed by a walk over the Millennium Bridge and then a guided tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre where we learnt all about the rebuilding of the Globe.  We finished with a look around the Globe exhibition containing grand costumes and swords.

We visited the English Heritage run Dover Castle in Kent on a rainy day in early September.  Here we checked out the Royal Regiment Museum, the Naafi Officers' Mess,  the fascinating Secret Wartime Tunnels and underground hospital, the medieval tunnels, plus the keep and its many exhibits including Thomas A Becket's chamber and Henry VIII's bedroom and exhibition.

Home to many aircraft from different aviation eras, we toured the four main areas - the Milestones of Flight Hall, Bomber Hall, Historic Hangers and finished with a guided tour of the Battle of Britain Hall.  We had a very enjoyable visit with the highlights being the Battle of Britain tour, walking through the Sunderland flying boat and viewing the history of aviation timeline.

Monkey World attraction in DorsetMonkey World - August 2006 (18 images)
Monkey World is an Ape Rescue Centre in Dorset where 16 species of rescued and endangered apes and monkeys live and play happily within its 65 acres.  Having previously visited as part of our Dorset holiday in 2005, we enjoyed it so much we returned for another visit where we learnt stuff from the keepers' talks - and Belinda came away with her very own monkey!

We hadn't been to Thorpe Park theme park for a while so decided the time was ripe for another visit to try all the new rides such as Colossus, Nemesis Inferno, Detonator, Slammer and Stealth plus old favourites like Tidal Wave, Rumba Rapids and Loggers Leap (see the faces we pulled!)  We also visited the animals at Thorpe Farm, riding on the Canada Creek railway.

Ooo ar!  Among the Somerset places we visited were Glastonbury, where we explored the many mystic shops, walked up the ancient Tor and took in the Chalice Well Gardens and Abbey.  Other attractions visited included the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Cheddar Caves and Gorge and a ride on the West Somerset Railway visiting Dunster plus a windy walk along Brean Down to an old fortress.

Last year we enjoyed the Egyptian themed sandy attraction in Brighton, so went again in 2006 to see the Roman themed sand sculptures.  We learnt all about the Roman Empire with all its highs and lows.  See Mike flex his muscles with a Roman guy!  We also took a ride on the little Volks seafront railway and enjoyed an Italian meal at Brighton Marina.

Staying in a well located guest house for a long weekend in the Arundel area of Sussex, we toured the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum near Chichester, Arundel Castle and the nearby Wildfowl & Wetlands Centre.  Oh, and we checked out a number of local restaurant/pubs, enjoying some excellent meals into the bargain.

Our early year visit to London took in Covent Garden where we enjoyed the street entertainers, Leicester Square, the Trocadero shopping and entertainment complex, and Carnaby Street.  In Hyde Park we enjoyed an ice cream and walked the length of The Serpentine to the Princess Diana Memorial whereupon the heavens opened and we saw a fantastic rainbow.

Weekend Break to the Rye area in KentRye Weekend Break - October 2005 (30 images)
After a somewhat traumatic year for us both during 2005 we needed a short break and chose Rye in East Sussex.  We explored historic Rye town, visited the Heritage Centre and walked across to Camber Castle, tried some local pubs and took a ride on the narrow gauge Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway in the warm October sunshine.

On a hot August day we enjoyed a local visit to see a little bit of Egypt on our doorstep - the Sand Sculptures of pyramids, figurines and hieroglyphics created on the seafront near Brighton Marina.  The sculptures depicted life in ancient Egypt and as we walked round we found out all about Egyptian gods and rulers, finishing with a cooling ice cream and a look in the gift shop.

Longleat tourist attraction in WiltshireLongleat Visit - July 2005 (15 images)
We went to visit Longleat on the wettest day of an otherwise sunny summer and enjoyed seeing the animals in the Safari Park with the mischievous monkeys and delightful Deer.  On a tour round Longleat House we noticed the Marquis of Bath had his picture up everywhere, and we took a ride on the miniature railway round the grounds and alongside the lake.Return to top

We enjoyed a week of hot sunny weather exploring the Dorset countryside, coast and attractions including Monkey World, Corfe Castle, Swanage, Lyme Regis, Dorchester, The Cerne Abbas Giant, Hardy's Monument and Chesil Beach, walking parts of the South West Coast Path and putting our new Sat Nav receiver through its paces along the way.

Following on from the cool new Dr Who TV series which we watched avidly earlier in 2005, we saw there was an exhibition on Brighton Pier so went along to have a look round.  With doctors and monsters old and new plus tons of information on the old and new series we had a great time!  See Mike almost get eaten by a Slitheen!

We received a Red Letter Day gift for dolphin watching on the Moray Firth in the Scottish Highlands for Christmas 2003.  So we combined this into a Highland cottage holiday, staying near Inverness, and also doing some Nessie spotting on Loch Ness, cloud observing up the Cairn Gorm Mountain, steam breathing the Strathspey Steam Railway to Aviemore and whisky tasting in a distillery.

We enjoy our regular jaunts to visit the attractions of London.  This time we visited the Tower of London and had a guided tour around this very popular London attraction by a Beefeater, also seeing the Crown Jewels and the White Tower.  Unfortunately they wouldn't lock Mike up so he's still at large to inflict this website on the world!

In early March we went out for the day to visit the historic city of Canterbury and had an enjoyable time walking round the city wall, looking at all the fine old buildings, then visiting the Canterbury Tales attraction and learning all about the pilgrims.  We marvelled at the splendour of Canterbury Cathedral and finished our day at the castle.

For Mike's birthday treat we went to Eastbourne and visited the Museum of Shops 'How We Lived Then' attraction which is a collection of shops set-up just as they would have been in times past.  No jokes this time about Mike remembering shops like this!
 

Legoland leisure theme park near Windsor, UKLegoland - September 2003 (24 images)
For Belinda's significant birthday in this month, we went to visit the Legoland theme park near Windsor.  Although it was geared towards smaller children, we had a great day out enjoying the rides and shows in the warm late summer sunshine.  And everything was made out of Lego!

On the last day of August we enjoyed yet another hot day in the sunshine watching those plucky participants jump off Bognor Pier wearing all kinds of funny flying costumes and trying to fly further than 100 meters to win £25,000.  We also enjoyed a picnic, saw Sir Richard Branson doing the prize giving and got in a game of crazy golf.

This is becoming a regular visit for us and a very enjoyable one too.  It was even more crowded this year (due to the hot summer maybe?) and we observed air displays by The Utterly Butterly Wingwalkers, Chinook, Nimrod MR2, Spitfire and Hurricane and of course the spectacular Red Arrows display, plus many more.

We enjoyed some excellent weather on our 2003 holiday, visiting the South Devon Railway plus Totnes, Kingsbridge, Salcombe and a chocolate factory.  We did many walks along the South West Coast Path in the hot sunshine, visiting many beaches along the way - Wembury, Heybrook Bay, Hope Cove, Thurlestone, Bigbury, Burgh Island and Bantham.  And the sun shone all week!

For our first visit of 2003 in April we took a trip to London to see the James Bond exhibition that was on at the Science Museum and then moved on to the Natural History Museum round the corner to see Mike's recent ancestors.  Belinda thought they bared an uncanny resemblance to Mike, particularly with regard to their eating habits!Return to top

On a warm sunny day in late September we went on our last main visit of 2002 to Chessington World of Adventures Theme Park in Surrey, where Mike wimped out of all the scary rides.  He did go on The Vampire, Runaway Train and Dragon Falls though and ventured into The Creepy Caves.  We also visited the Animal Land in the park.

Eastbourne Airbourne Airshow in SussexEastbourne Airbourne Airshow - August 2002 (18 images)
We returned to Eastbourne in Sussex again in August to see the excellent and free Eastbourne Airbourne Airshow, enjoying displays from a Lancaster, Harrier and Tornado and many more plus the fascinating ground displays on the Wish Tower lawns.  As a result Mike wanted to become a pilot and Belinda a wing walker!  Oo-er!

On another visit to Sussex we visited Eastbourne to enjoy the Eastbourne Birdman event where people attempt to fly from the pier wearing all sorts of funny costumes!  Then the following week we did a summer walk to the beach at Seaford, a little further along the Sussex coast where Mike made a mess of an ice cream!

In June 2002 we holidayed in the rain in Cumbria, renting a lovely holiday cottage in a small village called Staveley, near Kendal.  We visited Kendal where we (mainly Belinda) shopped in the factory outlet and climbed up to the castle.  We also went to Coniston and Grange over Sands, took a cruise on Lake Windermere, rode on the Haverthwaite Steam Railway and did two Fell walks.

We went 'cat sitting' in Bodmin in May 2002 to look after Belinda's friend's kittens while she had a holiday.  We visited the Eden Project, the Lappa Valley steam railway, a cider farm, walked the Camel Trail and visited the towns of Fowey, Truro and Newquay.  See Mike looking for beach babes and Belinda on the cider!

This is our Easter 2002 visit to the historic county town of Lewes in East Sussex where we saw many fine old buildings, the famous court, had an excellent lunch in a good pub and visited the castle and museum.  All these images are taken digitally.  See Mike, the big shot!

We visited the London Eye and HMS Belfast in March 2002, taking a flight on the Eye, with a great view of London down below, then toured HMS Belfast, a retired battleship moored on the River Thames.  The images are of higher quality than the previous galleries' video stills, with some taken on 35mm but most digital.  See Belinda flashing!

Taking a short break during August 2001, we travelled up north to Edinburgh for the famous Military Tattoo and wandered around the city and its famous festival.  We also visited the Beamish Open Air Museum near Gateshead, a living museum, and saw how people lived in a northern town in the early 20th century.  See Belinda in a gift shop!

We holidayed in North Wales in June 2001, renting a small cottage in Penmachno, near Betws-y-coed.  We visited Llangollen and went on a horse drawn canal boat, Criccieth where we tried to play golf and visited the castle, in Llanberis we climbed Snowdon, walked the Pen-y-pass plus visited Llandudno where we looked in many gift shops!  See Belinda trying to play golf!

Beaulieu Motor Museum in HampshireBeaulieu Motor Museum, Hampshire - April 2001 (13 images)
Beaulieu is on the edge of the New Forest in beautiful countryside.  We visited in April 2001 during the time they had a James Bond cars display.  The museum has a collection of many fine vintage vehicles, a ride through the history of motoring, interactive models to demonstrate how things work, a monorail round the grounds, go carts and a fine café.  See Mike getting carried away!

Eee by gum!  Off to Yorkshire for a week where we visited the towns of Harrogate, Knaresborough and York plus took a steam train on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Goathland (Aidensfield from 'Heartbeat' on the telly).  We did some retail therapy at a factory outlet and walked around Robin Hood's Bay and Grafton, which was also the village we stayed in.

We stayed in the heart of Derbyshire's Peak District National Park and enjoyed many walks around the peaks, including Monsal Dale (seen in the image here) and Miller's Dale near where we stayed at Litton.  On the tourist trail we rode the rides at Alton Towers theme park and took in the Coronation Street tour in Manchester.  Plus we got in a visit to Buxton and the Blue John Cavern.
