Snowdonia Holiday - Scenic walking & Llanberis attractions
- June 2019 (52 images)
In a return visit to Snowdonia we filled in some gaps in our touring of
this amazingly scenic area. That meant steaming along on more
heritage railways, a good look around the town considered the outdoor
activity centre of North Wales, Llanberis, and a fantastic walk along
the awesome Aberglaslyn Pass to Beddgelert.
Snowdonia Holiday - Mountains, Mines & Railways - June 2018
(85 images)
The beautiful Snowdonia National Park in North Wales was our
destination, and of course we enjoyed an exhilarating 'walk' up Snowdon
among the stupendous mountain scenery! We also explored
the area's world-famous slate and copper mining industrial heritage and
rode some wonderful preserved railways – the Welsh Highland and Great
Orme tramway.
Buckinghamshire Holiday, Bletchley Park & Shuttleworth -
May 2017 (58 images)
Bletchley Park, the renowned WW2 code breaking site was a priority
during our Buckinghamshire holiday, as was the nearby Buzz narrow-gauge
heritage railway plus some wonderful walks - one encompassing the Grand
Union Canal and great train robbery site. Then over in adjacent
Bedfordshire we toured the Shuttleworth Collection, a marvellous museum
of vintage aircraft.
Dorset's Jurassic Coast & Dorset Attractions Holiday
- June 2016 (52 images)
Dorset's wonderful World Heritage coast was the draw for yet another
cottage holiday and it didn't disappoint. In some staggeringly
scenic coastal walking we explored the geologically rich Lulworth Cove
& Durdle Door, found fossils at Chesil Beach & the Isle of
Portland, and walked the Purbeck Way at Wareham. We also visited
two museums: the Royal Signals and Tolpuddle Martyrs.
Wye Valley / Forest of Dean Holiday - July 2015
(69 images)
Spanning the Welsh-English border, the Wye Valley has some superb
scenery to enjoy, as does the neighbouring Forest of Dean. We
toured this attractive area of Britain in a week's cottage holiday,
visiting beautiful Symonds Yat; the nostalgic Dean Forest steam
railway; several ruined castles; went underground at Clearwell Caves,
oh, and enjoyed some wonderful walks of course!
Bond in Motion
Exhibition, London - September 2014 (20 images)
Don't you just love the Bond movies? Well, the Bond in Motion
exhibition at London's Covent Garden has an enthralling display of 50
vehicles actually used in the famed James Bond films. And it's
not just the cars; there's aircraft, bikes and boats used by 007 too,
plus a fascinating selection of props, gadgets, models and production
art to wonder at. Let's go...
Pembrokeshire Holiday, South Wales -
June 2014 (72 images)
The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in Wales has some terrific
coastal walking to enjoy and so we did; around Broad Haven, St Davids
Peninsula and Trefin. And how could we resist visiting the
wonderful Skomer Island with its cute puffins, or a tour of the
splendid St Davids Cathedral and adjacent Bishop's Palace; oh, and
Carew Castle and Tidal Mill... all in a sun-blessed week!
Warner Bros. Studio Tour - September 2013 (31
images)
Heard of the Harry Potter films? Well, now there's an awesome
visitor attraction dedicated to them, called the Warner Bros. Studio
Tour. We'd enjoyed many of the films so we headed there to
partake in some magic, spells and potions and learn how the films were
made as we wandered among the various film sets from the Great Hall to
Diagon Alley and Hogwarts Castle. Magical!
Kent Holiday -
June 2013 (58 images)
Kent has more castles than any other county in Britain and we explored
two of them on our cottage holiday in the 'Garden of England' - the
lovely Leeds and Bodiam castles. Our other visits included
Chatham's historic dockyard, Port Lympne wild animal park, a ride on
the KESR preserved railway, and several walks surrounding the Pilgrims
Way and Reculver Tower near Herne Bay.
London - Britain at War & Churchill War
Rooms - September 2012 (27 images)
Our military related visits are always a firm favourite with us, so
with another London trip well overdue we headed into the capital to
explore the sobering Britain at War Experience at London Bridge and
then on to the enthralling Churchill War Rooms at Westminster. We
then crossed St. James's Park and Green Park to view the recently
unveiled Bomber Command Memorial.
Wiltshire Holiday
- June 2012 (60 images)
We'd never holidayed in Wiltshire despite passing through many times...
until now. Our various visits included Stonehenge (of course!),
more mysterious stones at Avebury, Salisbury's grand medieval
cathedral, Old Sarum fort, Rockbourne and its Roman Villa, and Breamore
House. Plus we ventured into the neighbouring New Forest and
explored bewitching Burley.
Duxford Imperial War
Museum - August 2011 (25 images)
We hadn't visited a military related visitor attraction for a few years
so we put this right with a trip to Duxford Imperial War Museum, a
fascinating historic aviation collection in Cambridgeshire. The
vast complex housed many preserved military and civil aircraft, plus a
Battle of Britain section, a 1940 Operations Room, American Air
Museum, Land Warfare section and more...
Isle of Wight Holiday - June 2011 (63 images)
We'd been aiming to tour the Isle of Wight for ages and finally did so
with a week's cottage holiday on this wonderful island. To the
west we visited The Needles, Alum Bay and the Old Battery fort; in the
middle historic Carisbrook Castle and the preserved IOW Steam Railway;
and to the south scenic Shanklin and gorgeous Godshill with its
marvellous model village.
Watercress Line - Mid Hants Steam Railway
- July 2010 (17 images)
Mike didn't get his annual steam train fix on holiday this year (the
withdrawal symptoms are a nightmare!) so we decided to fix that with a
fairly local visit to the Mid Hants Steam Railway, otherwise known as
The Watercress Line. We saw the engines, the stations, the
signals, and Mike got soot in his hair and cinders in his eyes and that
made him a happy chappie again!
West Cornwall Holiday - June 2010 (55
images)
Cornwall, aha - the beaches, the sights, the scenery, the sun... oh
yes, let's not forget the sun! So we packed our sunscreen and off
we went for another (last time 2002) visit to
this wonderfully scenic part of England, touring the far west taking in
Land's End, St Ives, Mullion Cove & Poldhu Point, Praa Sands,
Porthleven, Marazion & St Michael's Mount. And the sun shone
all week long!
Osborne House, IOW -
September 2009 (16 images)
At short notice we had an opportunity to cruise across the seas to a
south-sea island in the sun... Err, OK then, it was a visit
to Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. So off we went with
cameras charged to Queen Victoria's huge seaside home overlooking The
Solent where we snapped away in the amazing gardens and adjacent Swiss
Cottage. We can dream though...
Cotswold Holiday - July 2009 (62
images)
Figuring it was about time we visited the very scenic Cotswolds in the
West Midlands, we rented an apartment in the lovely village of Broadway
for a week. From there we walked up to the nearby tower, toured
the Shakespeare houses at Stratford-upon-Avon, enjoyed some history at
Warwick and Sudeley castles, rode on the GWR steam railway and visited
Bourton on the Water.
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard - November 2008 (25
images)
On a cold and wet winter's day we headed to the city of Portsmouth to
enjoy the Victorian Festival of Christmas at Portsmouth Historic
dockyard for some traditional (and snow covered) seasonal cheer.
Not only did we marvel at the colourful characters and street
performances, we also boarded HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and saw the
preserved Mary Rose.
Gower Holiday - July 2008 (44 images)
Having seen the 2007 TV series 'Britain's Favourite View' and being
blown away by the stunning scenery of Gower in south Wales, we were
inspired to make it our destination for our 2008 cottage holiday.
We weren't disappointed, despite some variable weather, and enjoyed
plenty of scenic (and strenuous!) walking in and around the many lovely
coastal areas.
Imperial War Museum - April 2008 (16 images)
Off to London and the Imperial War Museum where we were impressed by
the well organised gallery halls containing aircraft, guns, tanks and
ground vehicles used in various conflicts. In other areas we
learnt much about the technicalities of warfare and the human
side. We also visited 'For Your Eyes Only', the Ian Fleming
exhibition taking place at the time.
New Forest - October 2007 (38 images)
Staying in a lovely New Forest cottage for a short break in this
beautiful area of Hampshire, we visited Burley to buy some scrumpy
cider and fudge, Lyndhurst to look around the museum, and walked along
the pebbles to Hurst Castle. We also visited Buckler's Hard, an
Owl and Otter wildlife park, and enjoyed a lovely scenic autumn walk
around Brockenhurst.
Tower Bridge - September 2007 (18 images)
On another jaunt to London we toured the Tower Bridge Exhibition,
learnt all about its fascinating history and enjoyed the breathtaking
views from the high-level walkways. There were plenty of hands-on
exhibits to try; we also visited the Victorian Engine Rooms and saw the
original steam engines that used to power the bridge's arms.
Tank Museum Bovington - August 2007 (20 images)
Mike wanted to try his hand at putting a tank through its paces, but
the nearest he got was a wild ride round the dirt track in a tracked
vehicle. We had a most enjoyable look round - and in - this
fascinating historic collection of huge tanks and tracked military
armoured vehicles from various eras and wars at this Dorset attraction.
Shropshire Holiday - July 2007 (51 images)
Staying near the Welsh border we enjoyed a ride on a quaint narrow
gauge steam train from Welshpool and were fascinated by Ironbridge
Gorge and Blists Hill Victorian town. We did two walks - part of
Offa's Dyke from Knighton and part of the Shropshire Way, we explored
castles at Stokesay and Ludlow, and we visited a past times nostalgia
museum and Acton Scott farm.
V&A Museum and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre -
April 2007 (18 images)
For our first outing in 2007 we went to London to see the Kylie
exhibition which was taking place at the V&A museum, followed by a
walk over the Millennium Bridge and then a guided tour of Shakespeare's
Globe Theatre where we learnt all about the rebuilding of the
Globe. We finished with a look around the Globe exhibition
containing grand costumes and swords.
Dover Castle - September 2006 (20
images)
We visited the English Heritage run Dover Castle in Kent on a rainy
day in early September. Here we checked out the Royal Regiment
Museum, the Naafi Officers' Mess, the fascinating Secret Wartime
Tunnels and underground hospital, the medieval tunnels, plus the keep
and its many exhibits including Thomas A Becket's chamber and Henry
VIII's bedroom and exhibition.
RAF Museum Hendon - August 2006 (18 images)
Home to many aircraft from different aviation eras, we toured the four
main areas - the Milestones of Flight Hall, Bomber Hall, Historic
Hangers and finished with a guided tour of the Battle of Britain
Hall. We had a very enjoyable visit with the highlights being the
Battle of Britain tour, walking through the Sunderland flying boat and
viewing the history of aviation timeline.
Monkey World - August 2006 (18 images)
Monkey World is an Ape Rescue Centre in Dorset where 16 species of
rescued and endangered apes and monkeys live and play happily within
its 65 acres. Having previously visited as part of our Dorset holiday in 2005, we enjoyed it so much we
returned for another visit where we learnt stuff from the keepers'
talks - and Belinda came away with her very own monkey!
Thorpe Park - August 2006
(18 images)
We hadn't been to Thorpe Park theme park for a while so decided the
time was ripe for another visit to try all the new rides such as
Colossus, Nemesis Inferno, Detonator, Slammer and Stealth plus old
favourites like Tidal Wave, Rumba Rapids and Loggers Leap (see the
faces we pulled!) We also visited the animals at Thorpe Farm,
riding on the Canada Creek railway.
Somerset Holiday - July 2006 (54 images) click for Somerset
video gallery
Ooo ar! Among the Somerset places we visited were Glastonbury,
where we explored the many mystic shops, walked up the ancient Tor and
took in the Chalice Well Gardens and Abbey. Other attractions
visited included the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Cheddar Caves and Gorge and
a ride on the West Somerset Railway visiting Dunster plus a windy walk
along Brean Down to an old fortress.
Roman Sand Sculptures - June 2006 (14
images)
Last year we enjoyed the Egyptian themed sandy attraction in Brighton,
so went again in 2006 to see the Roman themed sand sculptures. We
learnt all about the Roman Empire with all its highs and lows.
See Mike flex his muscles with a Roman guy! We also took a ride
on the little Volks seafront railway and enjoyed an Italian meal at
Brighton Marina.
Arundel Weekend Break - April 2006 (32 images)
Staying in a well located guest house for a long weekend in the Arundel
area of Sussex, we toured the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum near
Chichester, Arundel Castle and the nearby Wildfowl & Wetlands
Centre. Oh, and we checked out a number of local restaurant/pubs,
enjoying some excellent meals into the bargain.
London Visit - April 2006 (12 images)
Our early year visit to London took in Covent Garden where we enjoyed
the street entertainers, Leicester Square, the Trocadero shopping and
entertainment complex, and Carnaby Street. In Hyde Park we
enjoyed an ice cream and walked the length of The Serpentine to the
Princess Diana Memorial whereupon the heavens opened and we saw a
fantastic rainbow.
Rye Weekend Break - October 2005 (30
images)
After a somewhat traumatic year for us both during 2005 we needed a
short break and chose Rye in East Sussex. We explored historic
Rye town, visited the Heritage Centre and walked across to Camber
Castle, tried some local pubs and took a ride on the narrow gauge
Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway in the warm October sunshine.
Egyptian Sand Sculptures - August 2005
(12 images)
On a hot August day we enjoyed a local visit to see a little bit of
Egypt on our doorstep - the Sand Sculptures of pyramids, figurines and
hieroglyphics created on the seafront near Brighton Marina. The
sculptures depicted life in ancient Egypt and as we walked round we
found out all about Egyptian gods and rulers, finishing with a cooling
ice cream and a look in the gift shop.
Longleat Visit - July 2005 (15 images)
We went to visit Longleat on the wettest day of an otherwise sunny
summer and enjoyed seeing the animals in the Safari Park with the
mischievous monkeys and delightful Deer. On a tour round Longleat
House we noticed the Marquis of Bath had his picture up everywhere, and
we took a ride on the miniature railway round the grounds and alongside
the lake.
Dorset Holiday - July 2005 (54 images)
click for Dorset
video gallery
We enjoyed a week of hot sunny weather exploring the Dorset
countryside, coast and attractions including Monkey World, Corfe
Castle, Swanage, Lyme Regis, Dorchester, The Cerne Abbas Giant, Hardy's
Monument and Chesil Beach, walking parts of the South West Coast Path
and putting our new Sat Nav receiver
through its paces along the way.
Dr Who Exhibition - June 2005 (14
images)
Following on from the cool new Dr Who TV series which we watched avidly
earlier in 2005, we saw there was an exhibition on Brighton Pier so
went along to have a look round. With doctors and monsters old
and new plus tons of information on the old and new series we had a
great time! See Mike almost get eaten by a Slitheen!
Scotland Holiday - July 2004 (50 images) click for Scotland
video gallery
We received a Red Letter Day gift for dolphin watching on the Moray
Firth in the Scottish Highlands for Christmas 2003. So we
combined this into a Highland cottage holiday, staying near Inverness,
and also doing some Nessie spotting on Loch Ness, cloud observing up
the Cairn Gorm Mountain, steam breathing the Strathspey Steam Railway
to Aviemore and whisky tasting in a distillery.
Tower of London - June 2004 (22 images)
We enjoy our regular jaunts to visit the attractions of London.
This time we visited the Tower of London and had a guided tour around
this very popular London attraction by a Beefeater, also seeing the
Crown Jewels and the White Tower. Unfortunately they wouldn't
lock Mike up so he's still at large to inflict this website on the
world!
Canterbury - March 2004 (16 images)
In early March we went out for the day to visit the historic city of
Canterbury and had an enjoyable time walking round the city wall,
looking at all the fine old buildings, then visiting the Canterbury
Tales attraction and learning all about the pilgrims. We
marvelled at the splendour of Canterbury Cathedral and finished our day
at the castle.
Eastbourne Museum of Shops - February
2004 (10 images)
For Mike's birthday treat we went to Eastbourne and visited the Museum
of Shops 'How We Lived Then' attraction which is a collection of shops
set-up just as they would have been in times past. No jokes this
time about Mike remembering shops like this!
Legoland - September 2003
(24 images)
For Belinda's significant birthday in this month, we went to visit the
Legoland theme park near Windsor. Although it was geared towards
smaller children, we had a great day out enjoying the rides and shows
in the warm late summer sunshine. And everything was made out of
Lego!
Bognor Birdman - August 2003 (12 images) click for Bognor
Birdman video gallery
On the last day of August we enjoyed yet another hot day in the
sunshine watching those plucky participants jump off Bognor Pier
wearing all kinds of funny flying costumes and trying to fly further
than 100 meters to win £25,000. We also enjoyed a picnic, saw Sir
Richard Branson doing the prize giving and got in a game of crazy golf.
Eastbourne Airbourne - August 2003 (10
images) click for Airbourne video gallery
This is becoming a regular visit for us and a very enjoyable one
too. It was even more crowded this year (due to the hot summer
maybe?) and we observed air displays by The Utterly Butterly
Wingwalkers, Chinook, Nimrod MR2, Spitfire and Hurricane and of course
the spectacular Red Arrows display, plus many more.
Devon Holiday - July 2003 (42 images) click for Devon video
gallery
We enjoyed some excellent weather on our 2003 holiday, visiting the

Bay, Hope Cove, Thurlestone, Bigbury, Burgh Island and Bantham.
And the sun shone all week!
James Bond & Natural History Museum - April
2003 (33 images)
For our first visit of 2003 in April we took a trip to London to see
the James Bond exhibition that was on at the Science Museum and then
moved on to the Natural History Museum round the corner to see Mike's
recent ancestors. Belinda thought they bared an uncanny
resemblance to Mike, particularly with regard to their eating habits!
Chessington World of Adventures
- September 2002 (25 images)
On a warm sunny day in late September we went on our last main visit of
2002 to Chessington World of Adventures Theme Park in Surrey, where
Mike wimped out of all the scary rides. He did go on The Vampire,
Runaway Train and Dragon Falls though and ventured into The Creepy
Caves. We also visited the Animal Land in the park.
Eastbourne Airbourne Airshow - August
2002 (18 images)
We returned to Eastbourne in Sussex again in August to see the
excellent and free Eastbourne Airbourne Airshow, enjoying displays from
a Lancaster, Harrier and Tornado and many more plus the fascinating
ground displays on the Wish Tower lawns. As a result Mike wanted
to become a pilot and Belinda a wing walker! Oo-er!
Eastbourne Birdman & Seaford Visits
- August 2002 (16 images) click for Birdman video gallery
On another visit to Sussex we visited Eastbourne to enjoy the
Eastbourne Birdman event where people attempt to fly from the pier
wearing all sorts of funny costumes! Then the following week we
did a summer walk to the beach at Seaford, a little further along the
Sussex coast where Mike made a mess of an ice cream!
Lake District Holiday - June
2002 (37 images) click for Lake District video gallery
In June 2002 we holidayed in the rain in Cumbria, renting a lovely
holiday cottage in a small village called Staveley, near Kendal.
We visited Kendal where we (mainly Belinda) shopped in the factory
outlet and climbed up to the castle. We also went to Coniston and
Grange over Sands, took a cruise on Lake Windermere, rode on the
Haverthwaite Steam Railway and did two Fell walks.
Cornwall Holiday - May 2002 (38 images) click for Cornwall
video gallery
We went 'cat sitting' in Bodmin in May 2002 to look after Belinda's
friend's kittens while she had a holiday. We visited the Eden
Project, the Lappa Valley steam railway, a cider farm, walked the Camel
Trail and visited the towns of Fowey, Truro and Newquay. See Mike
looking for beach babes and Belinda on the cider!
Lewes Visit - March 2002 (24 images)
This is our Easter 2002 visit to the historic county town of Lewes in
East Sussex where we saw many fine old buildings, the famous court, had
an excellent lunch in a good pub and visited the castle and
museum. All these images are taken digitally. See Mike, the
big shot!
London Eye & HMS Belfast Visit - March
2002 (23 images) click for London video gallery
We visited the London Eye and HMS Belfast in March 2002, taking a
flight on the Eye, with a great view of London down below, then toured
HMS Belfast, a retired battleship moored on the River Thames. The
images are of higher quality than the previous galleries' video stills,
with some taken on 35mm but most digital. See Belinda flashing!
Scotland Holiday & Beamish Visit - August 2001 (20
images) click for Scotland video gallery
Taking a short break during August 2001, we travelled up north to
Edinburgh for the famous Military Tattoo and wandered around the city
and its famous festival. We also visited the Beamish Open Air
Museum near Gateshead, a living museum, and saw how people lived in a
northern town in the early 20th century. See Belinda in a gift
shop!
Wales Holiday - June 2001 (30 images) click for Wales video
gallery
We holidayed in North Wales in June 2001, renting a small cottage in

April 2001 (13 images)
Beaulieu is on the edge of the New Forest in beautiful

vintage vehicles, a ride through the history of motoring, interactive
models to demonstrate how things work, a monorail round the grounds, go
carts and a fine café. See Mike getting carried away!
Yorkshire Holiday - July 2000 (28 images)
Eee by gum! Off to Yorkshire for a week where we visited the
towns of Harrogate, Knaresborough and York plus took a steam train on

was also the village we stayed in.
